How to make the most of your luggage allocation when flying

Are you getting ready for your summer holidays? With the way the weather has been so far this summer you are probably heading abroad! If you are flying you need to be aware of the restrictions around the size of luggage you can take and what can go in your bags. Read our blog for some hints and tips on how to make sure you have an easy and safe journey this summer…

HAND LUGGAGE

With a lot of airlines now charging for hold luggage it is tempting to try and travel light and only take hand luggage. This can be done – but takes some careful planning!

Size of your bag

Hand luggage, for most airlines, can be no bigger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm so make sure that you buy the right bag that fits in with these restrictions but is the maximum capacity you can take.

What you can take!

Now, this is the really tricky part as if you are only taking hand luggage the main thing you are going to come up against is the ‘no liquids over 100ml rule’:

The following restrictions apply to all liquids, creams, gels, pastes and aerosols taken through security control:

• Liquids may only be carried in containers holding 100ml or less.
• They must be carried separately in a single bag which is:
• Transparent and resealable
• No larger than 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in)
• Able to close properly with all the items inside.
• At security control, place the bag in the tray with your other items. 

Now, if you are travelling with a teenager this may be the point at which you pay the extra for hold luggage! However, if you are going to persevere our tips are;

• Buy travel sized versions of your essential products from your chemist (they have a huge range now)
• Buy a local shower gel, shampoo & conditioner for the whole family from the supermarket when you get there.
• A resealable sandwich bag from your supermarket that is 20cm x 20cm is ideal to carry your items in.

HOLD LUGGAGE

Putting your luggage in hold can come with its own hassles as there is a chance it can get lost or damaged. Follow our tips to try and prevent these things happening:

• Have luggage that is sturdy but non-descript (the fancier it looks the higher chance it has of get ‘lost’.)
• Make sure it is packed well, not overstuffed, and all zips and fastenings are secure.
• Attach a label to each piece of luggage with your contact details on (for home and your holiday destination) but make sure your home address is hidden from view.
• Consider attaching stickers or tape to your luggage to personalise it, so that it is easily identifiable on the luggage carousel.
