Pocket sprung, foam or both? How to find the right mattress for you

It’s said that we spend roughly one-third of our lives asleep, so it makes sense to invest in a high-quality mattress to ensure you wake up feeling well rested and rejuvenated.

Of course, the right type of mattress depends on your personal preference and budget, but to help you find the perfect match, here’s a closer look at the three main types of mattresses on offer at Aldiss:

1. Pocket sprung

As the name suggests, pocket sprung mattresses are made from pockets of individual springs that provide even support and pressure relief. Each pocket of coils can move individually, meaning you’re less likely to be disturbed by your partner’s movements or roll into each other during the night. Pocket sprung mattresses also tend to be cooler than memory foam, which is an important consideration if you’re someone who gets hot at night.

Spring mattresses are often the most affordable option and can be great for occasional use in guest bedrooms. One of our best-selling spring mattresses, the Relyon Heritage Comfort 1000, offers great value for money with an edge-to-edge sleep surface for added comfort and support.

2. Foam and memory foam

Foam mattresses mould to your body’s shape and sleeping position for a sumptuous, sink-in sensation. They tend to be slightly more expensive than spring mattresses, and are designed to relieve pressure points on sensitive areas such as your back, hips, knees and shoulders while keeping your spine aligned.

Our popular Tempur mattresses, which are made from a breathable foam material, have the added benefit of less than three per cent motion transfer. This means that if you or your partner tosses and turns at night, or you have different sleeping patterns, you’re less likely to be woken up.

3. Hybrid

Combining the stability and support of pocket sprung with the luxurious comfort of foam, hybrid mattresses offer the best of both worlds for a luxurious sleeping experience.

Tempur and Emma are two of our most popular hybrid mattress brands, both of which use advanced technology to offer excellent pressure point relief, breathability and responsiveness. These mattress brands also come with removable and washable covers for easy cleaning.

What should I consider when choosing a mattress?

There are a few considerations that can help you narrow down your search for the perfect mattress:

Sleeping position – If you’re a side-sleeper or move around a lot at night you may be better suited to a soft/ medium mattress that moulds to your body’s position while providing support. Firmer mattresses are often recommended to people who sleep on their back or front to help keep their body stable and aligned.

Allergies - If you suffer from allergies, mattresses made from hypoallergenic materials can help to ease symptoms. For example, the Reylon Heritage Comfort 1000 Divan Set has a 100 per cent natural probiotic fabric treatment to provide a protective barrier against allergens, ordours and bacteria.

Back or joint pain - If you suffer from back pain, foam or orthopaedic mattresses are often recommended, with medium firmness to provide optimal support. An adjustable mattress could also be a good option as you can sleep slightly raised, which can help to relieve discomfort.

If you’re unsure what mattress to choose, we recommend coming into one of our Aldiss stores in Norwich or Fakenham to try before you buy. We stock a wide range of mattresses and bed sets in all sizes, so you shouldn’t struggle to find something to suit you.
